Expansion of HGS

Expansion of HGS

The Governing Body has agreed with Hertfordshire County Council to the expaansion of the school as part of a long term County strategy to ensure sufficient secondary school places are available across the area. The school will enlarge by 1.5fe (forms of entry) from September 2018. allowing an increase in the number of Year 7 places available from 165 to 210. This will mean that an additional 45 Year 7 places will be available at each school from September 2018, and in each subsequent year thereafter.

The school requires building works to provide additional classrooms and facilities to accommodate the additional places and the County Council’s Cabinet has approved capital funding to support this work which will be managed by the school. We will be building a new two storey block next to the Sports Hall containing 9 teaching spaces, adding 2 new science laboratories between the current science block and gymnasium, expanding the dining room and adding a new entrance at the rear of the main school building, altering some of the lower block classrooms to provide new technology space and adding a new car park next to the Highbury Tennis Courts.

Planning approval for the building work was received in June 2017 and preparatory work is now underway. Work on the new two storey block will begin in summer 2017, with other building work scheduled around school holidays to minimise disruption to school life.
