SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,
Despite the frost on the ground this morning it certainly feels like Summer has begun as the Year 10s have been taking their mock exams this week. I must say they have been exemplary in their approach to these mocks and have done brilliantly with following the procedures that enable the exams to run smoothly. I am sure the Year 10s will be working hard this weekend as they prepare for next week's exams and I wish them all the very best of luck.
On Thursday, we had our annual Take Your Child To Work Day for the Year 8s. I am sure it was an insightful experience for parents, carers and students alike, and I thank you for your support with this. Obviously, it is not possible for some students to accompany their families to work, and so we ran a parallel experience in school for some students. I'd like to thank Mrs Townsend for her work organising this and also the large number of volunteers who came into school to make this a really exciting and valuable experience for our students. I popped in to one session and every student was fully engaged, asking questions of the volunteers and listening attentively to the responses.
I'd like to congratulate the Year 7 Mathematicians Grace, Lauren, Aashi and Lottie who represented the school so well in a Maths competition on Thursday. Miss Pedge accompanied them to the venue and she was so proud of their achievements - they scored highly in a very competitive field. Well done to all involved.
We have final exams beginning for A level Art students, and the linguists will be taking part in their speaking exams - the very best of luck to you all!!
Have a good weekend,
James Crowther, Headteacher

Year 8 Careers Day in school
Students who didn't take part in TYCTWD had a full careers programme in school yesterday, which included learning about different careers by speaking to visiting professionals from a range of organisations in a speed-dating format, as well as taking part in hands-on workshops.
The day culminated in a fun session with Airbus, where students had to design and make a model of a satellite that could successfully launch its payload into orbit – in this case a raw egg! The groups’ designs were put through 20 seconds of launch conditions with varying results!

Pride of HGS - voting is still open!
Our Ellie Swanton Pride of HGS Award, named after our former Head Girl (2017) who it set up, is a means of recognising the amazing work that our Sixth Form students do both in and out of school.
Anyone can nominate a Sixth Form student, and there are three categories:
CHARITY: Someone who has been working to support a charity, such as fundraising or volunteering, either inside or outside school.
COMMUNITY: Someone who has given their time to support the local community or a local community group.
SELFLESSNESS: Someone who has given their time or efforts selflessly to help others. It could be supporting a particular individual, or generally being willing to give time and energy in any situation, either in or out of school.

Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust is offering a free online ‘Managing Study Stress’ webinar for students who are aged 16+, which covers some of the key content delivered in our in-person workshop.
The webinar offers insights into the common triggers and symptoms of stress and provides guidance on cognitive and behavioural techniques which students can learn and use themselves to tackle these symptoms. These skills can be particularly helpful for students as they are preparing for their exams and/or completing coursework. The webinar will next run on the following dates:
Please note this webinar is open to the public and those attending will be anonymous.
