Amazing Apprenticeships provides really helpful information on vocational pathways and apprenticeships for Post-16 and Post-18 learners and parents/carers. 

They have a really useful parent zone http://amapps.uk/parent-zone  with lots of resources and fact sheets helping parents to understand what can often feel like uncharted territory.

At HGS we run an Apprenticeship Club for Year 12s during form time. The next date will be 9 July. Students who indicated in their careers meetings that they may want to do an apprenticeship after Year 13 have been invited, but all Year 12s are welcome. These sessions will continue weekly during the Autumn term as they go into Year 13, and into the early Spring term - during what is the main application window for degree and higher apprenticeships. Interactive Virtual NHS Healthcare Careers
Work Experience Programme

Many students interested in healthcare careers have a good understanding of individual professions, but often have limited exposure to how healthcare teams actually work together within the NHS.

In practice, patient care is rarely delivered by a single professional. Instead, patients are supported by multidisciplinary teams made up of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, speech and language therapists, paramedics, pharmacists, dietitians and many other allied healthcare professionals, all contributing different expertise towards the same patient outcome.

To help students gain a deeper understanding of how modern healthcare is delivered, we invite them to attend our NHS Allied Healthcare Virtual Work Experience Programme on Sunday 5th July.

During this live virtual work experience session, students will explore realistic patient scenarios and follow patients throughout their healthcare journey, gaining insight into how different healthcare professionals collaborate to assess, diagnose, treat and support patients.

Students will gain exposure to a wide range of healthcare careers, including:
• Nursing
• Midwifery
• Paramedicine
• Physiotherapy
• Occupational Therapy
• Dietetics
• Radiography
• Speech and Language Therapy
• Prosthetics and Orthotics
• Pharmacy

Rather than simply learning about career options, students will develop a broader understanding of healthcare delivery, patient-centred care, communication within multidisciplinary teams, and the practical realities of working within the NHS.

This experience can help students strengthen their university applications while also developing a more informed understanding of the profession they may wish to pursue.

Students who complete the programme will also receive a Certificate of Attendance, which can be used as evidence of their commitment to exploring healthcare careers.

Highlights from our Summer 2026 programme include:

Young Thinkers Summer School (online and in-person options available)

Students explore some of philosophy's most engaging questions - What is truth? How do we know what is real? What makes something right or wrong? - developing their ability to think clearly, express ideas, and engage respectfully with different viewpoints.

Young Lawyers Summer School (online and in-person options available)

An introduction to law through discussion, case studies, and a full mock trial. Students learn how legal arguments are constructed and presented, building confidence in public speaking and structured reasoning.

Young Doctors Summer School (online and in-person options available)

Students are introduced to the practical thinking behind medicine - from recognising symptoms and asking the right questions to suggesting possible diagnoses and treatments. The course emphasises teamwork, communication, and careful listening.

Young Writers Summer School (in-person only)

A creative course for students who enjoy writing stories, poetry, or other forms of expression. Through guided exercises and activities, students develop their ideas, experiment with style, and gain confidence in their writing.

Young Mathematicians Summer School (online only)

A problem-solving course for students who enjoy maths and want to explore it beyond the school curriculum. Through puzzles, games, and team challenges, students encounter ideas such as cryptography, number systems, and logical reasoning.

Young Diplomats Summer School (in-person only)

An introduction to global issues through discussion and role-play. Students take on the roles of different countries and organisations, working together to respond to challenges such as trade, conflict, and migration.

How can my students attend?

The in-person courses take place at Woburn House in Bloomsbury, Central London, during July and August. We also offer a range of live small group online courses in August for students who prefer to take part from home.

Course fees range from £85 - £395 depending on the subject, format, and length, and places can be reserved with a 25% deposit.

 We offer bursaries of up to 90% of course fees for families on lower incomes. Full details can be found here.

Insight into Lloyds Banking Group Virtual Event

Lloyds are putting on their last virtual event of this academic year, to give students an opportunity to see what it’s like working at one of the UK’s biggest banks. The session will be packed with information, career insights, and an opportunity to gain a better understanding of how to apply for corporate roles and prepare for the interview stages.

Lloyds Banking Group is a world-renowned commercial, personal, and investment banking management firm and the UK’s biggest bank. LBG has over 30 million customers and around 60,000 employees globally, and is a FTSE 100 company. There are endless opportunities to grow your career at the bank, and this could be your first stepping stone to finding out how you could launch your career after school at the bank.

Webinar: Clearing in 5 Easy Steps 

Results day is just around the corner, and even if you’re not planning on using Clearing, it’s a good idea to be prepared for all eventualities. The University of East Anglia (UEA) are running a webinar to cover everything you need to know about Clearing – including the chance to hear a mock call – so you’ll know just what to expect when the big day arrives. (Even if you are not planning to go to UEA.)

You’ll hear from UEA’s Head of Undergraduate Admissions, plus a current UEA student who went through Clearing themselves. It will be a friendly, welcoming session where you can post questions, or just watch and listen! Parents or carers are also welcome to join.

We’re pleased to share our upcoming Taster Courses at City St George’s, University of London. These sessions give students the opportunity to explore subjects of interest, support informed decision-making and also provide valuable experiences to highlight in a personal statement.

Delivered by our expert academics, these free two-hour sessions provide an opportunity to experience learning in a university environment and gain a deeper understanding of a chosen subject area. You will also learn about employability skills, professional experience opportunities, and potential career pathways to help prepare for your future.

In addition,you can experience what it’s like to study in the heart of London at our Clerkenwell campus, situated among world-leading organisations, businesses, and industries.

Uni Taster Days signposts students and parents to opportunities and events at universities - taster sessions, summer schools and open days. Currently some universities are helping towards travel costs or offering meal vouchers for students attending open days.

Emmanuel College - Y12 Medic Mentoring Scheme

Taking place between July and December, the Medic Mentoring Scheme is open to Yr 12s attending state-maintained schools in the UK who are applying for medical courses at UK universities including Oxford and Cambridge. Applications close on 17th June.

Participants will have an account set up for them on our e-platform and will be paired with a current clinical medic at Emmanuel. Through more formal interactions via our webinar series and more informal interactions with a mentor via the e-platform, the scheme aims to help guide participants through the application process and prepare them to make competitive applications.

Webinars will cover:

-Introduction to the Scheme and Approaching the UCAT
-Writing a Personal Statement for Medicine (led by an Admissions Tutor)
-Approaching Cambridge Medicine Interviews (led by an Admissions Tutor)

Participants will also receive:

-Written feedback from their mentor on a personal statement draft
-A mock interview

King’s College - Year 11-13 Entrepreneurship Essay Competition 

The competition is free to enter and is open to students in Years 11-13. It is designed to encourage students from all backgrounds to explore entrepreneurial thinking and consider higher education pathways.

Students are invited to submit a 1,000-word essay in response to one of four questions:

-How do personal experiences and social context shape entrepreneurial thinking?

-Can failure be a strength in entrepreneurship?

-What responsibilities do entrepreneurs have beyond profit? 

-How do constraints shape entrepreneurial creativity?

We are especially keen to reach students who may not traditionally see themselves as “entrepreneurial” or who have not previously considered applying to Oxbridge. The competition welcomes students from all subject backgrounds and encourages the use of local, community based, or personal examples.

Deadline: 5 August 2026 (9pm)

Prizes: £1,500 (winner), £750 (two runners-up)

Additional recognition: Shortlisted/Highly Commended certificates
