SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

I want to begin today's newsletter with a point of real celebration: our former Director of Finance and Resources, Tony Hankin, has been awarded the Silver Wolf award for his "exceptional service over many years" to the Scouting movement. This is the highest award given by the Scout Association and Tony is a deserving recipient.  I know that many of our families will be aware of Tony's contribution to Scouting and have more than likely benefited from it directly. We couldn't be more proud of him.  Well done Tony - much deserved!

Back at school, the Year 13s have been working hard for their mock exams; the students I have spoken with have been pleased with how they have gone so far, and I wish each student well for the remaining exams. Meanwhile, the Year 11s have been doing their Sixth Form interviews as part of their preparations for submitting their KS5 Options choices.

Next week sees the start of the Year 9 Options assemblies. It would be really helpful if families access the Options website and have conversations with their children about the subjects they are considering. This is an important and exciting time for Year 9s as they start to shape their school experience for the next two years.

Have a good weekend,

James Crowther, Headteacher

Exam invigilators needed

We are currently looking for flexible, well-organised individuals to join our team of examination invigilators to work on a casual basis, for public (GCSE/A level) exams and school mock exams.

Public exams take place from May to the end of June, while mock exams take place in November, December and January. Successful candidates will be confident and caring with good interpersonal skills.

The key focus of this position is to invigilate students and ensure that guidelines and regulations are followed.

Experience is not essential as full training will be given, but flexibility in hours is a must.

Please contact exams@hgs.herts.sch.uk to request an application form or for more information. The deadline for applications is 17 January 2024.

Royal Institution
Mathematics Masterclasses for Year 9

Two of our Year 9 students, Sunaina Rawther and Lena McGuffie, were nominated by our Maths department to attend five Saturday morning sessions at the University of Hertfordshire last term. They both thoroughly enjoyed this enrichment opportunity and had this to say about the experience:

"Once a fortnight, we participated in Maths lectures held at Hertfordshire University. Each was hosted by a knowledgeable and experienced guest speaker who spoke passionately about their chosen field in a way that was interactive and fascinating. Over several workshops, we learned about various topics including fractals, logarithms, matrices and dimensions. The experience provided an excellent social opportunity for both of us as we were surrounded by pupils from neighbouring schools sharing similar interests in Maths. This also provided challenging competition. We are both thankful for the opportunity as it was an interesting and enjoyable experience. It gave us an insight into what studying Maths at a higher level could look like and that is something we will carry with us through the decisions we are going to make in the next couple of years."

Medic Mentor's virtual work experiences provide students with valuable insights and opportunities that may be otherwise difficult to access. Developed in collaboration with Birmingham University Hospitals Trust, this virtual work experience has proven to be transformative for thousands of secondary school students over the past year. It goes beyond being just an alternative to in-person shadowing; it is a crucial step in preparing students for their upcoming physical placements.

Medic Mentor have designed a 6-month medical e-learning work experience programme, focusing on one specialism each month, allowing students to set their own pace of learning. From structured teaching to direct interaction with doctors and healthcare professionals, the programme ensures students not only observe procedures but also gain a broader understanding of roles within the medical field.

Covering everything from ethics to procedures and broader team roles, this virtual work experience provides an overview of students' desired career paths and the skills that medical professionals are looking for, thereby enhancing their UCAS applications.
