SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

It has been a week in which the talent, hard work and commitment of our students and staff have been fully on display.

On Wednesday, 90 of our students undertook the Intermediate Maths Challenge. It was great to see so many enthusiastic mathematicians taking part and I wish them all the best for their results. A big thank you to Miss Chowdhury for organising and preparing the students for this.

Also this week, our school canteen had a surprise visit from the Food Standards Agency, yet it was no surprise to us that Mrs Wilson and our catering team secured the highest rating for standards and hygiene. Every year, when leaving students reflect upon their time at HGS, the food provided by Mrs Wilson and the team always gets a mention. Well done and thank you.

Last night saw Ms Atkins lead her first event in her new role as Head of Music as she presented 'Live from the Hill 2024', and it was a tremendous success.  The students were simply amazing, showcasing a huge range of musical talent spanning multiple genres. They performed individually, in pairs and as groups with everyone demonstrating courage, confidence and a real love for music.  Congratulations to everyone involved!

Live from the Hill rehearsals yesterday

Next week we have our annual Art show to look forward to - I can't wait to see the work this year's exam groups will be displaying.

Have a good weekend,

James Crowther, Headteacher

Contacting school staff

Parents/carers are reminded to use our general email address, admin@hgs.herts.sch.uk, to contact any staff member. Our admin team will direct your query to the correct teacher, leader or member of non-teaching staff.

Please ensure your child’s name and tutor group, as well as the staff member you wish to contact, are included in the subject of your email.

Please use the admin@ email every time you make a new contact. Thank you.

Dropping off student belongings

We have had an increasing number of parents dropping off PE kits and other required items throughout the school day. Students are asked to check they are bringing everything they need for the day as office staff cannot always be available to receive and distribute forgotten items.

February Diversity Display

We have another packed display board for students to take a look at this month, including LGBTQ+ History Month, the Lunar New Year and the history of Valentine's Day, plus some festivals coming up in the Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist religions.

Year 10 Project Polyglot

Last week 30 French and Spanish GCSE students visited local primary schools Whitehill, Wilshere Dacre and William Ransom to give French and Spanish lessons.

The lessons were the culmination of weeks of hard work and collaboration by our students during Wednesday lunchtimes. They were excellently put together with plenty of interesting content and activities. The students far exceeded expectations, presenting confidently and speaking so well in the foreign language. The primary pupils were incredibly engaged and we have heard from many sources how much they enjoyed the sessions!

The MFL department are delighted with this achievement and are already looking forward to the second round of lessons later this year!

Attention all swimmer parents

If your swimmer is interested in applying for the district swim team this year, please ensure you read the attached information. Applications are due through a Google Form (link is found on the form) by 9am on Wednesday 7 February. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Froud.
