SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable break over the Easter holiday. It has been a pleasure to welcome the students back to school and the summer term has already seen them enjoying lunchtime out on the field.

Over the holiday a number of students took part in two very successful trips, the Classics trip to Rome and Naples, and the PE sports tour to Valkenburg, Holland. I'd like to thank all the staff and volunteers who made the trips possible, and I also thank the students who were fantastic ambassadors for the school - well done to you all!! This week our Year 12 Geographers are conducting fieldwork in Southwold and Norwich.

This first week back has contained some amazing highlights:

On Monday I had the pleasure of issuing a number of Headteacher Awards to students across the years - those who achieved success in a recent Art competition, Aashi Shah, Sophie Beach, Abigail Hughes, Agnes Foster and Emilia Rodseth, and also Emmie Lawrence in Year 7, who won an international film competition with her original short film. Well done to all!

On Tuesday we celebrated our second annual Culture Day - this was a brilliant day, with students and staff proudly displaying and sharing aspects of their culture with the whole community through traditional dress, song, dance and food.

On Tuesday night the Year 13 Drama students had their A Level Practical exam.  They performed group pieces and individual monologues - the talent and hard work on display were incredible, and each student gave performances to be proud of.  Well done to all involved - a special thank you to Mr Balfe for his support of these students over the duration of the course and to Mrs Gale from HBS who came along to help out on the evening.

Last night Miss Atkins led the Spring Concert, an event which showcased a breadth of talent and provided a wonderful evening of musical performances. A special thanks to the Year 13 musicians who performed in their last school concert, and who have contributed to seven years of concerts during their time at HGS.

Today our Year 11 students have their Art exam and I wish them all the very best with that. Next week our Year 10s begin their mocks, and I also wish them every success with these exams.

Have a good weekend,

James Crowther, Headteacher

Food Drive - thanks for your donations!

Science Fair

At the end of last term we held our annual Science Fair for Years 7 & 8, where students volunteer to take part in teams, each one doing an experiment of their own design and then presenting their findings at their stall. This year’s theme was Colour and there was an amazing array of projects, from the colour of carrots and their nutritional value, to optical illusions and the psychology of colour. Friends and family were invited to the Fair along with a panel of judges including former Science teachers and representatives from GSK. It’s fair to say everyone was blown away by the standard of scientific investigation on display, as well as the creativity and communication skills that went into the presentations.

All the teams deserve a huge well done for putting themselves forward and seeing through their projects. Here are the prize winners in various categories:

Best use of technology:

The Blue Butterflies – Lexie Copp, Maya Evans, Nini Teng

Most Enthusiastic Team:

Viral Color Changing Dress - Izzy Kelly, Mathilde Rowe, Daya Natt

Best Presentation:

Operation 101 - Sarah Hodnett, Lauren Richardson, Hannah Powell

Best Scientific Explanation:

Chameleon Colour - Lottie Nyemecz, Evie Parsley, Katie Lange

3rd Place:

2nd Place:

Winners:

And the award goes to... Emmie Lawrence

We are so proud of Emmie in Year 7, who won Best Young Person's Film in the 60 Second Film Challenge out of more than 300 international entries. The panel of film industry judges unanimously voted for her film 'Finding Home', which she wrote, directed, edited and starred in. An incredible achievement, Emmie!

Valkenburg Sports Tour

In the early hours of Easter Monday, 92 students and nine members of staff set off for our long-awaited return to Valkenburg, Holland, for our bi-annual sports tour. We had the busiest week of training sessions and matches against Dutch teams and other touring British sides, as well as experiencing all the other excursions available in the town.

Each morning the hockey and football players undertook a training session led by professional coaches, and then they set out in the evening to play fixtures against local Dutch clubs. Students were able to put into practice what they had learnt in the morning and we had some fantastic results. Both the A teams for football and hockey had resounding wins at their first fixtures, but then had to battle harder in later matches. The B teams learnt much from their wins, narrow losses and draws. In the final tournament, Football A were overall winners and Football B came 3rd.

The netballers had two full days of coaching from a variety of coaches, including Kai, a member of the England Men’s u23 team and coach for Saracens Mavericks development squads. On the final afternoon there was a tournament with all of the touring schools. All teams acquitted themselves extremely well, implementing what they had learnt throughout the week. The Year 9 A team were runners-up in their tournament and the Year 8 A team were their tournament winners.

Away from the sports field, students enjoyed laser tag, tobogganing, a chair lift, Bounce and an evening at a pancake house, as well as the obligatory shopping trip in the beautiful town. The whole week was rounded off with a disco attended by all the touring schools from the UK.

From the moment we left Hitchin till arriving back home again, students were polite, hard-working and good fun. Even the confiscation of their phones for an hour as a penalty for locking themselves out of their rooms was taken in good spirits!

The HGS core values of Aspiration, Perseverance, Kindness, Respect and Positivity were all on display. Masterclass tour staff, sports coaches, coach drivers and hotel staff were all complimentary of them. On the ferry home a leader from another school stopped us to say "how polite and well-mannered your girls are, a real credit to your school."

All tour members, students and staff enjoyed their time immensely, creating memories that will last a very long time.

Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust is offering a free online ‘Managing Study Stress’ webinar for students who are aged 16+, which covers some of the key content delivered in our in-person workshop.

The webinar offers insights into the common triggers and symptoms of stress and provides guidance on cognitive and behavioural techniques which students can learn and use themselves to tackle these symptoms. These skills can be particularly helpful for students as they are preparing for their exams and/or completing coursework.  The webinar will next run on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 28 May, 3 - 4 pm

Please note this webinar is open to the public and those attending will be anonymous.
