SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

I seem to often start the newsletter by stating what a busy week it has been, but with Year 7 and Year 13 Talk the Talk workshops, the Year 8 residential trip to PGL Caythorpe and then the addition of an Ofsted inspection, busy seems somewhat an understatement.

Hopefully, you will have seen the letter I sent out yesterday in which I expressed my thanks for your support and commended the students for representing the school so well over the course of the inspection. I also reminded parents and carers that our own school survey is still live and very much relevant, so please take some time to complete this by 18th October.

As ever. Talk the Talk was a great success and I urge you to speak with your child about their experience of the workshops and ask them about the skills they developed.

I would like to draw your attention to the Parent Trustee vacancy - if you would like to be more directly involved with the school please do consider submitting an expression of interest. Details are given below.

Finally, next week we have our first concert of the academic year and I look forward to seeing many of you there on Thursday evening.

Have a good weekend.

James Crowther, Headteacher

Those students who travel to and from school by bus are reminded about obtaining discounts via Hertfordshire County Council's Saver Card plus the Intalink Connect ticket scheme and app.

We have a vacancy on the Board of Trustees for a Parent Trustee (previously called a Governor), and welcome and encourage applications from parents of all backgrounds who would be keen to serve in this role.

Serving as a Trustee is both a challenge and a pleasure, and Hitchin Girls’ is fortunate to have Trustees who play a full part in the life of the school. Parent Trustees have an important role to play as they can bring a contemporary view through the school life of their child(ren), as well as a wide variety of skills and experience, to the table.

The Trustees welcome and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, particularly Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic individuals, who are currently under-represented on the Trust Board. No prior experience of school governance is required, since detailed induction and onboarding are provided for all new Trustees.

More info and application form

A reminder to parents and carers that we are currently conducting a detailed school survey. Although this has coincided with Ofsted's own survey this week, it is still relevant and very important in determining the next steps for our school, so please do take some time to complete it by 18 October.

Talk the Talk were in school this week to run their spoken communication workshops for our Year 7s and Year 13s, with activities designed to promote confident communication, self-esteem, resilience and a better relationships. As always the trainers were engaging and fun as well as sharing practical techniques that students can take into all areas of life - so a big thank you from us all.

Thank you to everyone who took part in Jeans for Genes Day by making a donation, wearing denim, baking, and buying bakes! We were able to raise a total of £1696.80 for Jeans for Genes, whose purpose is to support the one in 25 children who has a genetic condition and their families.

On Wednesday 27 November we are running our annual HGS Futures Fair, when students get the chance to meet and talk with employers and professionals from a range of sectors to find out about different careers.

We are looking for employers/professionals who would be happy to have a stand at the fair and talk to students about their work, especially from (but not limited to) the creative industries - Art, Design, Film, Performing Arts, Media, etc. Please spread the word - anyone who may be able to help is asked to email clare.townsend@hgs.herts.sch.uk Thank you!
