SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

Bravo!! What an amazing week as our school production, The Addams Family, took place. A cast and band of incredibly talented actors, singers and musicians performed four shows, which had the audiences laughing, cheering and applauding all the way through. The final night concluded with a well-deserved standing ovation; I lost track of the number of comments from the audience about how impressive the show was, such as "the best thing I've seen" and "It's like going to the West End" - it really was a triumph.

Huge congratulations and thanks to each and every cast member, the band, all the backstage crew and everyone on the production team. Mr Balfe, Miss Atkins, Miss Pedge, Ms Romain, Mr Gregory and Mrs Cooper led the way as director, musical director, choreographers, technical director and producer respectively, and they were supported by many staff and students in making the show happen.

Beyond providing fantastic entertainment, the show enabled collaboration across the year groups, and I know this has helped students make new, strong friendships that they may never have otherwise, as well as some lasting memories. Without doubt our school values were demonstrated in abundance by all involved. Once again - congratulations and thanks to everyone!!

Also this week, four students - Aashi Shah (Y8), Lauren Richardson (Y8), Elsie Burston (Y9) and Anna Polikoff (Y9) - went to Cambridge to compete in the UK Mathematics Trust Regional Team Maths Challenge, coming 2nd place out of 18 schools in the region. They only dropped 6 marks out of 236 possible marks and were only 2 marks behind the winners. We are extremely proud!

Today students arrived in non-uniform for Comic Relief and it was great to see everyone getting behind this excellent cause. 21st March also marks World Down Syndrome Day and so odds socks were also in evidence as a sign of support.

And you to everyone who contributed to our Food Drive for the local foodbank today, which was organised by Mrs Reynolds and a team of students.

Finally very well done to our trampolinists and athletes for their recent successes, which you can read about below. Looking ahead, good luck to our GCSE dancers as they have their performance on Monday next week.

Have a good weekend.

James Crowther, Headteacher

Year 12 Criminologists had the interesting experience of taking part in mock scrutiny panels on Tuesday. The aim of these is to increase awareness of the role of the Police and Crime Commissioner in holding the Constabulary to account in its use of police powers, as well as increasing the diversity of independent scrutiny panels by including younger people.

The students worked with members of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner as well as existing volunteer panel members to recreate the scrutiny process in a realistic and interactive way. They reviewed real examples of Stop and Search and Use of Force records as well as body-worn camera footage from news coverage to consider how the law was applied. Our thanks to our visitors for the insightful session, which has also helped raise awareness of the importance of scrutiny in general.

Very well done to Sarena in Year 10, who put in a determined and resilient performance representing Hertfordshire at the national schools' cross-country championships at the weekend.

And in the indoor athletics county competition, we saw a fabulous performance by our Year 7 team - overall they came 6th and had some very good individual performances.

A few years ago our then Head Girl, Ellie Swanton, set up the Pride of HGS Awards as a means of recognising the amazing work that Sixth Form students do both inside and outside school. There are three categories students can be nominated for:

Charity: Someone who has been working to support a charity, in or out of school. This can be through fundraising, volunteering or any other relevant activity.

Community: Someone who has given their time to support the local community or a local community group, inside or outside school.

Selflessness: Someone who has given their time or efforts selflessly to help others. This could be someone that has supported an individual, or can always be relied upon in any situation to give their time and energy.

Anyone can nominate a student. It can be someone outside of school, a friend, a parent or a teacher.

Nominations will close in the first part of the Summer term. The overall winner will be presented with the shield.

To nominate a student please use this link: ttps://forms.gle/sxxvTKPoM2S5PWEq9

We look forward to reading your nominations!

This week we headed out into the sunshine with a group of Library Goblins to take part in the North Herts School Book Awards at Hitchin Boys' School. The pupils met up with students from eight other schools for some lively discussions about the shortlisted books and then voted for their favourites. While the votes were being counted, the students were entertained by an engaging and informative talk by comedian, author and broadcaster, Robin Ince, who spoke about his love of books and reading, and his experiences of writing. There was an opportunity to buy signed books from last year's winning authors courtesy of Next Page Books and some well-deserved refreshments.

We are pleased to announce that the winning books for the NHSBA 2025 were Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell and Glasgow Boys by Margaret McDonald. Our thanks to the librarians of Hitchin Boys' School for organising this wonderful event, to Robin Ince for his entertaining talk and to the pupils who took part for their impeccable behaviour - they were a credit to the school.

North Hertfordshire College is pleased to announce an open afternoon at Springboard Letchworth on Tuesday 1 April, 3pm – 5pm

Springboard
Letchworth Town Hall
Broadway
Letchworth Garden City
SG6 3BX

Springboard is a full-time personalised course which provides students with the support, knowledge, skills and confidence to become more independent, make informed decisions and ultimately progress into mainstream college and work.

Springboard is for young people aged 16 and over who require additional support before progressing to a cross-college vocational course or employment. Many of the students have a diagnosis or traits of autism. Many have associated emotional and mental health needs that require specialist and bespoke support before they can move on and make a successful transition to adulthood.

The students study Employability; Functional Skills Maths and English from E3 to Level 2; Creative Arts (Drama) Therapy; Life Skills; Personal Development and Wellbeing; Vocational Tasters in Art and Cooking; First Aid and Enrichment, and complete 34 hours of work experience in their vocational area of interest.

Students need to meet assessment criteria in order to access the provision but individual needs are always considered and decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, subject to funding being approved by the Local Authority.

If you would like to attend please RSVP to Mickaela  Windsor mwindsor@nhc.ac.uk or Rebecca Lewis rebecca.lewis@nhc.ac.uk, or call 07943 526089.
