SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon

On Wednesday this week the school held its 3rd annual Culture Day and it was a hugely successful celebration of the rich diversity within our school community.  Students and staff were able to celebrate their culture through dress, activities and a fashion show, raising £350 for the charity Diversity UK in the process.  Culture Day is a student-led event and huge thanks must go to Anwen, Lisa, Juanita and Elodie for their input and to the teaching team that supported them.

Next week sees the nation mark the 80th anniversary of VE day. On Thursday, there will be a special assembly for students and the school canteen with be serving a 1945 menu.  Students who are members of the forces cadets (and not undertaking public exams) are welcome to wear their uniforms to school on Thursday 8 May.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Head Girl and the Deputy Head Girls for next academic year. Following an exacting selection process I am pleased to announce that the Head Girl for 2025-26 is Milly Price and the Deputy Head Girls are Francesca Hart and Farah Laroubi.  Congratulations Milly, Francesca and Farah - I am certain you will all do a tremendous job!  You can read more about  them below.

Have a great long weekend.

James Crowther, Headteacher

We are delighted to introduce the new Head Girl Team for next year: Milly Price, Francesca Hart and Farah Laroubi! Congratulations to them all on their election to the roles of Head Girl and Deputy Head Girls!

"I am so excited and grateful to be taking on the role of Head Girl next year. Since Year 7, I have taken huge pride in being a part of HGS, particularly within the Music department. This has benefited me in so many ways and allowed me to feel safe and happy within the school and our community, which has led me to explore further education options and a career in Biology and Conservation. Working alongside the Deputy Head Girls, I hope to make every other student feel heard and represented so that they can feel as happy and safe as I have done. I strive to follow on from the work of the previous Head Girls and can’t wait to continue our long-standing traditions, and share the values of the school that help make it the warm community that it is."

- Milly Price, Head Girl

"Hi everyone! I’m Fran and I’m absolutely thrilled to be one of your Deputy Head Girls for the 2025-26 academic year. I am a member of Curie House, and I’m taking History, Philosophy and Ethics, and Politics at A Level. It’s an incredible privilege to be able to represent each and every student and Hitchin Girls’ to the wider community, alongside Milly and Farah. I’m so grateful to be given the opportunity to pay back, not only to the inspiring teachers that have helped to shape the person I’ve become today, but also the school that has provided me with so many opportunities. As Deputy Head Girl, I hope to be a role model to each and every one of you, and I would like to empower you to make the most of your time at HGS. I look forward to working with you next year!"

- Francesca Hart, Deputy Head Girl

"Hi, my name is Farah Laroubi and I am very excited to be HGS's Deputy Head Girl for the next academic year alongside Fran and Milly. For my A Levels, I am taking Media Studies, Sociology and English Literature, which would make me quite a creative and analytical person. I would probably be described by my friends and those who know me as quite an enthusiastic, thoughtful, and caring person, as I always try to be a helping hand when it is needed. As for my role next year, I promise to bring my passion, dedication and bubbly personality to this role and hopefully, with our strong team of leaders, help make a lasting positive impact on our school."

- Farah Laroubi, Deputy Head Girl

Lots of traditional dress, flag colours and football shirts brightened up the whole school for our third annual Culture Day on Wednesday. Many students contributed to the food stall and fashion show, with more turning out to support them. As with previous years, the day was such a positive celebration of the diverse backgrounds that make up our student and staff community. Well done and many thanks to Anwen, Elodie, Juanita and Lisa for running the event.

Congratulations to Juliet, Emily and Edythe who recently took part in the Hertfordshire combined athletics event, where they each had to complete a Heptathlon. They all worked incredibly hard on what was a long day of competing and finished in 1st place as a team - what a fantastic achievement. Particular congratulations go to Edythe who finished in 3rd place as an individual, and will now be considered for the Hertfordshire team in the next round.

And congratulations Year 12 Rounders team, who were undefeated in their recent tournament and came away as District Champions!

Huge well done to Harriet in Year 13, who competed for Team England for the second time at the World Cheerleading Championship held at ESPN World of Sport Disney in Orlando, Florida. The England Junior Co-Ed team came 5th in the world against more than 20 finalist countries! Harriet also competed with her London-based team Cosmic 5, again getting through to the finals and achieving a fantastic top-10 result in a tough division.

Our Diversity board for May is up - thank you Anwen, Elodie and Juanita, who have put together all the campaigns that will take place next month, including Deaf Awareness Week and Mental Health Awareness Week, as well as important dates in the different religious calendars.
