SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon

Today is a hugely important day for our school as it's Founders' Day. The morning involved special assemblies, students receiving awards, the prefect teams from Years 12 and 13 exchanging badges and handing over responsibilities, and of course the service at St Mary's Church.

This is followed by Sports Day and Enterprise activities in the afternoon - all in all it makes for a great day. The students have been working hard on their Enterprise ideas and, judging by their adverts, it looks like they will do incredibly well as they aim to raise money for Phase Hitchin and the school.

As well as the athletics events in school leading up to the track finals on Sports Day, this week has seen our students perform exceptionally well at the District athletics championships. We took 40 students to this competition on Wednesday and we had some amazing results:

Year 7 - 1st

Year 8 - 1st

Year 9 - 2nd

Year 10 - 1st

Well done to all involved.

Last night we held our annual Leavers' Supper for the outgoing Year 13 students - as ever, this was a lovely evening where we shared a meal and announced the winners of this year's Founders' Day awards.

At the start of the week, we welcomed Year 11 students, including a large number of external students,  into school, as we held three days of induction and taster lessons for our Sixth Form. With little time passing since the last public exam, it was great to see the students come back looking excited about the prospect of studying for their A Levels in September.

Last weekend saw our Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award expedition take place. Group leaders commented on all five of our school values being displayed in abundance, but particularly Perseverance, given the temperatures reaching the low 30s. I have received several messages praising the students; one referenced the students greeting them with politeness and positivity when they crossed paths on their hike. Such great ambassadors for the school - I am incredibly proud of all the students and staff who took part in the expedition. Well done!

Next week is another one full of tradition and celebration, with the Year 11 Prom, The Art and Technology shows and the Gym and Dance Display all taking place.

Finally, earlier this week I sent out a letter reminding parents and carers of the importance of adhering to the road markings and not using the school car parks for dropping off and collecting students. If you haven't had the opportunity to read the letter please find time to do so. Thank you.

Have a good weekend.

Chromebook repairs ahead of the new year

We are asking all parents to check that their child's Chromebook is in full working order and ready for the new academic year. This is so that the IT support and Library department are not overwhelmed by Chromebook requests and repairs in September.

If you purchased your child's Chromebook through the school scheme, you can log a repair request directly with Freedom Tech.

For Year 9 school scheme Chromebooks, the warranty will expire at the end of August. After this date students will no longer be able to have their Chromebooks repaired by the school, so please ensure you report any repairs in good time to be carried out before then.

Student printing in school

Since the recent upgrade of the Chrome browser extension for student printing in school, all Chromebooks need to be running Chrome OS v114 or later. This only applies to personal Chromebooks that were not purchased through the school scheme.

On the hottest weekend of the year, 52 Year 10s completed their Bronze D o fE qualifying expedition. It was one of the most challenging given the heat - staff had to work really hard to prevent the students from getting heatstroke, but no-one gave up. It was also one of the most enjoyable as students rose to the challenge.

By the end we had a few tears, mainly of relief; taped knees; sore legs and hips; girls walking with walking poles; patched-up boots; kit and rucksacks removed to lighten their loads; and some just too tired to speak. But they all got to the end and hopefully after a day or two they felt a big sense of achievement.

Pubs en route were great at providing water and facilities, and one group sought a bit of air-con and the loo in a Library, which was a first! The manager at Jordan’s Mill even gave us their air-conditioned meeting room to sit in when he saw that some of the girls were really struggling.

Huge thanks to all the volunteers (Geoff, Dave, Bob, Anna, Mark, Myk, Natalia and Neil) and especially school staff (Mrs Rowe, Mr Sutton, Mr Walter, Mrs Miller and Miss Wells) for giving up their weekend.

All five of the core HGS values were demonstrated in abundance, by staff as well as students.

Mrs Sara Edwards

Congratulations to Isla in Year 7 for the success of her team at Future Cheer Internationals 2025 in Bournemouth. Her team, Arrows Elite Missiles (Under 12s), came 9th out of 21 teams in a tough field at the largest cheerleading competition in Europe.

Last week saw the announcement of the Carnegie Medals for Writing and Illustration. These annual awards for children's books are chosen by librarians and students across the UK. This year the winners were Glasgow Boys and Clever Crow, with the Shadowers' Choice awards going to King of Nothing and Homebody.

Our school reading group, the Library Goblins, shadowed the awards, reading some of the shortlisted titles, watching videos of the writers and illustrators, and completing some book-related activities. In addition, all Years 7 and 8 pupils looked at the illustrated shortlist during their Library lessons. They discussed the style, impact and appeal of the illustrations and chose their favourite. Year 7 chose Wolf and Bear, while Year 8 opted for Grey.
