SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon

It really has been a phenomenal week at HGS, on the back of the very special end to last week, which saw the wonderful Founders' Day celebrations followed by the Sports Week finals and Enterprise activities - which this year raised a record amount, as you can read below.

The Year 8 Classics trip to Bath and other Roman sites took place at the start of this week - I hear that it was a resounding success and, as ever, our students impressed everyone who came across them. Their attitude and character invited lovely comments about their togetherness and kindness. Well done all.

On Tuesday night our Year 11s enjoyed their prom at Offley Place. It was great to see the year group come together and celebrate the end of their time in school.  The cohesiveness of the year group was clear for all to see as they danced the night away together.

The PE department have continued to deliver amazing events this week with an extraordinary Gym and Dance Display. Across two evening shows as well as a matinee for local primaries, almost 200 students showcased their amazing talents for gymnastics and dance, the culmination of countless hours of hard work and preparation. The event continues to evolve each year with new elements, more complex skills and bags of energy and enthusiasm. It was a real triumph!! Look out for the photo album next week.

Away from gym and dance, our Year 11 and Year 13  Art and D&T students also showcased their talents and hard work this week, with the Art and Design Technology show. We know how hard students and staff work in preparing for GCSEs and A Levels, but seeing the results of all their efforts displayed together is really impressive. Importantly, the inspiration that their work provides spreads far and wide, as Mrs Wallace invited a group of Year 5 children into school to meet the creators and see the displays. Well done to all involved.

Today, some PE students are enjoying a trip to Wimbledon whilst the Year 8s are having a very engaging visit form the author of Tsunami Girl, Julian Sedgwick. More on this next week.

So, lots to ask your child about over the weekend!!

Next week the end-of-year trips begin, and on Thursday we will welcome our new Year 7s into school for their Transition Day.  I look forward to meeting them all.

Have a good weekend.

James Crowther, Headteacher

Chromebook repairs ahead of the new year

We are asking all parents to check that their child's Chromebook is in full working order and ready for the new academic year. This is so that the IT support and Library department are not overwhelmed by Chromebook requests and repairs in September.

If you purchased your child's Chromebook through the school scheme, you can log a repair request directly with Freedom Tech.

For Year 9 school scheme Chromebooks, the warranty will expire at the end of August. After this date students will no longer be able to have their Chromebooks repaired by the school, so please ensure you report any repairs in good time to be carried out before then.

Student printing in school

Since the recent upgrade of the Chrome browser extension for student printing in school, all Chromebooks need to be running Chrome OS v114 or later. This only applies to personal Chromebooks that were not purchased through the school scheme.

Wanted! Board games and card games for students to play at lunchtime. If you have any unwanted games you are happy to donate to the school, please bring them to main reception. Thank you!

We end the athletics season on a massive high with lots of incredible results. Years 7 and 9 have worked hard at the district league and came away as league winners.

We also had an amazing day at the district championships, with lots of students achieving individual successes and medals. Overall Year 9 came 2nd and Years 7, 8 and 10 all became district champions!

Finally, this week we went to the county finals where we competed against the top 8 schools in the county. Yet again our athletes showed real determination and perseverance on what was an incredibly hot day, with the U16s finishing in 5th and the U14s finishing in 3rd.

Congratulations to all athletes who have competed this year, it has been a pleasure to spend the summer with you all, and I’m truly proud of what you have all achieved!

Miss Jacobs

As is tradition, form groups ran Enterprise stalls while the track finals were taking place on Sports Day last Friday. This year the stalls raised a remarkable £3004.75, which is a new record! Seeing the amazing amount of effort the students put into their products, games, marketing and sales, we were not surprised! All the proceeds will go towards school funds and local youth wellbeing charity Phase Hitchin.
