SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome from the Headteacher

Welcome to the first newsletter of this academic year.

This morning I led a whole-school assembly, which included a minute's silence to reflect upon the life of Queen Elizabeth II, give thanks for her service and offer our condolences to her family. This is a sad moment in time and there is a real juxtaposition, as it comes at the end of a week when we have returned to school full of excitement for the new year ahead.

I have spoken to every student in assemblies this week, and my message has been one of hard work, optimism, looking to the future, having high expectations and achieving great things. This morning I emphasised that there is no ceiling to what any of our students can achieve, and we all can take inspiration from the life of the Queen. For 70 years she was a strong and principled female leader - a real role model for our students. For those students who are particularly saddened by her passing I offered them comfort in the Queen’s own words: "Grief is the price we pay for love.”

Should your child be upset by events and need some reassurance, please do encourage them to speak with a trusted member of staff. Alternatively, MindEd is a source of information to help children and young people manage death and loss.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all parents and carers for ensuring our students have returned to school looking smart in their uniforms and fully equipped to learn. The sense of happiness, anticipation for the year ahead and readiness to engage in school life has been amazing - I couldn't have asked for more in my first week as Headteacher. There has been much to celebrate too, with this year's public examination results and improvements to the school site and facilities over the summer. I look forward to a truly fantastic year and sharing our successes with you.

Take care

James Crowther

GCSE and A Level results 2022

This year’s exam results, at both KS4 and KS5, were a real cause for celebration.  Nationally, results were down on last year - not for us.  48 % of our A Level grades were A/A* and we achieved our highest ever average grade score. At GCSE, we got our highest attainment scores and 52% of grades were Grade 7 or higher. Three students (Lucy Carmichael, Ellen Scott-James and Caitlin Coles) received straight 9s, 5 got all 9s and one 8, and Amber Mynott achieved the highest score in the country for Combined Science.

This is truly fantastic. It is a real refection of the hard work undertaken by our students. Moreover, it is also a reflection of the hard work and commitment of staff and parents and carers, to provide the highest quality of education and support despite the challenges of recent years. We all should be rightly proud of these outcomes and we all deserve congratulations.

It was an absolute pleasure to speak in the Year 12 assembly this week and tell our returning Year 11s how proud we all are of them. Furthermore, when I explained that they had achieved the school’s best ever GCSE results their own sense of pride and accomplishment was tangible. It was one of my favourite moments from my first week in my new role.

Finally, I would like to wish all of last year’s Year 13s and Year 11 leavers the very best for their future education and careers as they move into the next stage of their journey.

James Crowther

Refurbishments around school

Several parts of our school site have been refurbished and upgraded over the holidays, including the main reception area, the tennis courts, new picnic tables, classroom / office spaces the Lower Block windows (which are now more energy-efficient and will control classroom temperatures better all year round). These befores and afters give you an idea of all the hard work put in by our site team throughout the summer.
