SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Photo of Headteacher Mr Crowther

Good afternoon,

It has been an exciting week in school with our first two open mornings taking place on Tuesday and Thursday; it was wonderful to welcome so many families into our school so they could see the exceptional experience we offer. As ever, the students were the 'stars of the show', whether they were leading the tours or just going about their daily routine of working hard in class, being calm and respectful around the school and generally displaying our values in abundance - I couldn't be more proud. Wednesday next week will see our final open morning take place and I look forward to meeting everyone who will be attending then.

On Wednesday, we welcomed Year 10 parents into school for their Information Evening - it was great to see so many families here as we outlined some key information for the important GCSE years that lie ahead.

And today we showed our support for Jeans for Genes with our annual 'denim day' to raise money for this important charity. An extra thank you to the students who brought in homemade cakes for the bake sale.

Lots of denim and long queues at the bake sale!

Next week, we will welcome Year 8 families on Monday for their Information Evening, which will include important details about the upcoming PGL trip to Caythorpe Hall - please refer to the recent letter for more on this event.

A reminder that students have a four-day week next week, as the school is closed on Friday for staff training.

Finally, I would like to politely request that all parents dropping off or picking up students by car do so well away from the school gates. Additionally, the school car parks, including the one by the Music School and the one on Wymondley Road, should not be used by parents. These restrictions are in place to maintain the safety of our students and as such it is essential that they are adhered to. I thank you in advance for your support with this.

Have a great weekend.

James Crowther, Headteacher

All set for the open mornings with our House flags on display

INSET Day: Friday 3 October - please note school will be closed to students next Friday.

We have a wonderful report of the Geography department's Iceland trip to share from the head of department Mr Sutton, as well as some stunning photos taken by students and staff. Enjoy!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our recent tour of Iceland was an unforgettable adventure, immersing us in dramatic landscapes and geographical wonders. The trip began with a walk across the ‘Bridge Between Continents’, a tangible experience of standing between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates - a group photo opportunity not to miss! We then marvelled at the bubbling mud pools of the Gunnuhver Hot Springs before heading to our home for the week: Hjardabol Guesthouse.

Our itinerary was full of awe and wonder! A personal highlight was ‘Fly Over Iceland’, an immersive 4D-style experience which provided a memorable introduction to the Land of Fire and Ice, closely followed by the ancient Raufarholshellir Lava Tunnel, a 5,200-year-old subterranean passage that offered a glimpse into Iceland's fiery heart. The tunnel also provides a natural sound stage, a perfect spot for an impromptu singalong…

The Golden Circle route did not disappoint, with its stunning highlights. We soaked in the geothermal waters of the Secret Lagoon, felt the power of the Gullfoss Waterfall, and watched in awe as the Geysir Geothermal Area erupted with superheated water. A visit to the historic Thingvellir National Park provided a moment of reflection amidst a stunning natural amphitheatre, as well as many fantastic photo opportunities.

Our journey along the south coast was equally spectacular, revealing a landscape of black sand beaches and cascading waterfalls. While thick clouds and wet conditions prevented us from completing our walk to the Solheimajökull Glacier, we were all delighted to instead visit a stretch of coastline populated by puffins! I am sure that was a photo opportunity ticked off many bucket lists.

Beyond the daytime explorations, our evenings were filled with fun and memorable activities led by members of staff on the trip. These included a photo scavenger hunt, dramatic renditions of traditional Icelandic fairy tales, and a lively quiz evening.

The students showed great enthusiasm and curiosity throughout, making it a truly rewarding expedition. We are sure the memories of Iceland's unique landscapes and exciting activities will stay with them for a long time. Lastly, a huge thank you to all the members of staff who accompanied us on this trip: Mrs Hone, Mrs Miller, Mrs Parker and Mr Lynn.

The next big Geography adventure is currently being planned for 2027. Stay tuned!

HGS is now the proud holder of the Royal Horticultural Society School Gardening Award, Level 5 - the highest level there is! Well done Eco Club and Mrs Taylor, who achieved this in just one year and have enhanced our school's natural environment through their efforts.

Today we marked the European Day of Languages, to celebrate the richness of languages and cultures found in Europe, as well as highlighting the importance of multilingualism and the fun of learning new languages. We celebrated in tutor time with a quiz, of guessing the language in videos of students and staff speaking foreign languages.

In an unintended tie-in, we had German day in the dining room yesterday, with a menu featuring German-style doner wraps, potato rosti, sausages and schnitzel!

And coming up, we have French Pen Pal Group as a new addition to the extracurricular timetable! Open to all Year 9s and taking place at lunchtime on Mondays, this will be a chance to write letters in French to students in France.

Wanted! Board games and card games for students to play at lunchtime. If you have any unwanted games you are happy to donate to the school, please bring them to reception. Thank you!
