SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Message from the Headteacher

Good Afternoon,

I need to start today by making you aware of a Police appeal to find two missing teenagers, Poppie and Nick - please see the Police message below. Poppie is one of our students. Any information you may have should be passed immediately to the Police to enable them to find her as quickly as possible.  Obviously, we are all hoping that they are safe and are found quickly.

Today, we have representatives from Tesco in school working with our Year 10 students for Careers Week. This marks the end of an incredibly busy week including the Primary Sports Festival run by our Sports Leaders, a World Book Day book sale, the County Dance Festival, World Maths Day challenges and International Women's Day. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to all of these events.

Earlier today I met with a group of Year 9 and Year 12 students to present them with Headteacher's awards, for their contributions to Year 9 Enterprise activities and supporting Year 11s with revision. It was fantastic to issue so many awards at once and the students seemed particularly pleased with the new pin badges they received in recognition of their achievements.

A reminder that next week sees two further days of industrial action. The letter I sent out detailing the arrangements for these days is shown below for reference.

Have a good weekend

James Crowther - Headteacher

Industrial action 15 & 16 March

Please see below the letter sent to parents/carers earlier this week.

I am writing to confirm the arrangements for students on the third and fourth days of industrial action: Wednesday 15 March and Thursday 16 March 2023.

The strike is about the level of funding schools receive and terms and conditions. The argument is not with our school but we will be affected by the strike. A significant number of our teaching staff are members of the NEU, and since members are not required to notify the school in advance of their intentions, I have had to conduct a risk assessment on the safety of the school being open to all our students when it is unclear how many teaching staff will be in school on 15 and 16 March.

As with the previous days of industrial action, through discussions within our senior team, we have determined that we may not have sufficient staff available to safely manage our full roll of nearly 1400 students. However, due to differences in the school timetable on these two days, we have a different arrangement for each day.  These arrangements are as follows:

On Wednesday 15 March, students in Years 7, 11, 12 and 13 should attend school as normal.  There may be periods of the day when their normal teacher is not available and independent working will be expected (Years 7 and 11 will be supervised). Students should bring their laptops or other devices (Years 12 & 13) and Chromebooks (Years 7 &11) to school, fully charged.

Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 should stay at home and undertake remote learning, following their normal timetable.

On Thursday 16 March, students in Years 10, 12 and 13 should attend school as normal. There may be periods of the day when their normal teacher is not available and independent working will be expected (Year 10 will be supervised). Students should bring their laptops or other devices (Years 12 & 13) and Chromebooks (Year 10) to school, fully charged.

Students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 11 should stay at home and undertake remote learning, following their normal timetable.

For those students staying at home, work will be set on Google Classroom by teachers who are not on strike with ‘live lessons’ via Google Meet being utilised as appropriate.  All students will be required to log onto their Google Classroom for each timetabled lesson. If after 10 minutes no work has been set, or the teacher is not available, then students are required to undertake independent learning for that subject.  Should this be the case, students are advised to review prior learning and make use of websites such as Educake, MyMaths, Dr Frost, BBC Bitesize, Seneca and YouTube to support their work.  For Year 11s, the time when no teacher is available should be used for revision for GCSEs.

We will make provision available in school for students with SEND, or vulnerable children. There will be supervision by our Learning Support team, and students will undertake the same remote learning as their peers, but supported by the Learning Support assistants in school. We will have limited capacity and, in some cases, we will approach families directly to suggest attendance - or you may request a place by emailing admin@hgs.herts.sch.uk.

Children entitled to Free School Meals who are in school will be able to have lunch as usual from the school canteen. For those who are at home, we will be making arrangements for a packed lunch to be available and we will write to the families in question directly with more details.

I know that making alternative arrangements for your children will be difficult for some parents. That is why we are giving as much notice as possible and running as many classes as we safely can.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your support at this time.

Yours sincerely,

James Crowther
Headteacher

Year 11 school photos - Tuesday 14 March

We will be having a whole-year group photo of Year 11 taken on Tuesday 14 March, as well as individual school photos (Year 11 only).

Friendship group photos can also be taken for £5 per student, for which each member of the group will receive a 7" x 5" mounted photograph.

To have a friendship group photo taken (Year 11 only):
- On the day ask the photographer for a 'friendship group envelope' (one  envelope per group)
- Fill in the details requested and place £5 (cash or cheque, payable to Class Pictures) for each person from the group into the envelope. Seal and return to the photographer just before the photo is taken.

Non-uniform day, Friday 17 March

We will be raising money for Comic Relief and the DEC Turkey / Syria Earthquake Appeal through a non-uniform day on Friday 17 March.

A suggested donation of £1 for each student wearing non-uniform can be made via ParentPay towards our fundraising effort. ParentPay will be set up so that you may donate more than this amount, if you so wish.

Although students will not be required to wear uniform on this day, there are still expectations around dress standards for school:

  •  No sleeveless tops or cropped tops
  •  No flip-flops or other backless shoes
  •  No shorts

Thank you in advance for helping to maintain our dress standards.

Lost property

A large collection of lost property has built up in the main reception office, including jewellery, keys, earbuds, watches, glasses, etc. If you have lost any personal item like these do come and ask at the end of the school day.

International Women's Day

For International Women's Day on Wednesday 8 March, tutor time focused on this year's IWD theme of Embrace Equity, and the difference between the concepts of equality and equity. It was also great to see lots of hair accessories in House colours to celebrate the women whom they are named after.

Careers Week

We have had special speakers and activities this week for Careers Week. Year 10 D&T students, for example, got the chance to question Year 13 students about their career plans. They were also looking into lesser known jobs which link to D&T and discussing the key differences between careers.

Meanwhile in Music, a veteran sound engineer came in to regale GCSE students with tales of challenges in live broadcasting!

On Friday we were joined by Tesco for a whole day of interactive sessions for Year 10 students, looking at the property aspect of the business, including researching, acquiring and developing new store sites. The students then got to design their own 'store of the future' and present their ideas.

Netball

Some great results to share!

Congratulations to the Year 10 team who won the Bronze medal at the District Netball Tournament. They won an incredible 6 out of 7 games, but when it came down to goal difference, had to settle for 3rd place. The girls showed fantastic team spirit and support for one another. Well done to Jess, Evie, Holly, Hannah, Maliya, Tegan, Lydia, Izzie and Rebecca.

And congratulations also to the Year 9 team, who played remarkably to win all 5 games in their pool. They were then in a closely fought final with John Henry Newman and lost 8-4 but won the Silver medal. Well done Lydia, Emilia, Bethany, Deepuk, Kezia, Lexie, Isobel and Chloe.

Library news

World Book Day Celebrations

The Library held a book fair and cake sale to mark last week's World Book Day. All students were given a £1 token to spend on a book from a huge range of titles supplied by David's Bookshop in Letchworth.

All proceeds from the cake sale will be going to World Book Day and the charity Book Aid, who supply books to places in the world that lack access to them. Thank you to everyone who contributed their bakes, it looks like we've raised over £400!

Talk the Talk

Year 9 had a very valuable day of communication workshops all day on Friday, where Talk The Talk, a training charity for young people, ran engaging sessions on confident and effective oral communication, sharing skills that will be helpful in students' future careers and in daily life.

Sports Leaders

Year 11 Sports Leaders welcomed pupils from Whitehill Junior School this week for the Sports Festival they organised as part of their final assessment. Well done for planning and designing all the activities, and the very smooth running of the event.

Year 8 Football - winning Gold!

Many congratulations to the Year 8 football team who won their district tournament and took home the Gold medal recently. Great skill and teamwork were on display, and in a close final that ended up going into extra time, the team held their nerve and were victorious.

Senior Dance

Well done to the Senior Dance group who performed at the Alban Arena yesterday as part of the Herts Schools' County Dance Festival. The students danced beautifully, having worked incredibly hard over the past few months to get the piece together.

Athletics track open event

Saturday 1 April, 1 - 4pm

The outdoor athletics season begins in April, and the Stevenage and North Herts Athletics Club are starting the season with a Track Open at Ridlins Track. Photo finishes will be provided. The link to the entry form is below and the timetable is on the entry form.

It would be lovely to see as many students in action as possible as they do not need to be members of the club. It is also an opportunity for those in Year 10 doing GCSE PE to get a time for an event with a photo finish.

If you have any queries, please speak to Miss Murch.
