SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

Another busy week with exams, and trips to The Making of Harry Potter, the University of Hertfordshire and the Houses of Parliament!

I would like to take this opportunity to give my thanks to Mr Colin Minton - Colin has supported the school for over 40 years on a voluntary basis, as a governor, a trustee and a member. During this time Colin has helped countless colleagues in ensuring that the school is best placed to provide an exceptional education and experience for the benefit of students, staff, parents and the wider community.  Colin recently retired from his role, and this week we hosted a tea to celebrate and show our appreciation for all that Colin has done for the school. Thank you Colin.

June is Pride Month, and there are a number of events planned in school to celebrate this - see below for details of our Pride Reads display in the Library.

Finally, this weekend one of our Assistant Headteachers, Mrs Cole, is taking part in the Everest Challenge to raise money for Hitchin's youth wellbeing charity Phase. I am sure you will join me in wishing her all the best with this. Details of the fundraising effort can be found below.

Have a good weekend.

James Crowther, Headteacher

Parent use of school car parks

We continue to see parents and carers drop off students by car in the school car parks and by the main gates. This is causing safety concerns with cars turning around and students crossing the road where they should not be doing so. Please drop off your child nearby (not on the double yellow lines on Hollow Lane), from where they can walk safely to school.

A Level Politics

Year 12 Politics students were in London this week, visiting the Houses of Parliament and the Supreme Court for interactive and very informative tours.

In a packed day that brought their study of Politics to life, they attended a session on debating and law-making at Parliament, a talk by Bim Afolami MP's advisor about career paths into Politics. and a hearing at the Supreme Court.

Fundraising for Phase Hitchin

Phase is a charity that does amazing work with young lives across Hitchin, with a focus on building wellbeing and resilience so that they can thrive. Phase has worked with our students both in lessons and through Pastoral for a number of years, providing invaluable support for our school community.

Now the Phase team are completing an Everest climb challenge to raise vital funds for continuing their work with Hitchin's young people. Mrs Cole has been inspired to join the challenge and will be scaling (via a treadmill at an angle) as much of the height of Everest as she can on the night of 9 June. Having seen firsthand the positive impact that Phase has in our school, she felt she had to try and help their fundraising efforts.

If you would like to sponsor the climbing team please go to their Just Giving page. It's difficult being a teenager today, so please support this epic challenge to fund Phase's amazing work!

Read with Pride

We are celebrating Pride month in the Library with a display of some of the LGBTQIA+ books available to borrow. There are lots to choose from, including non-fiction, humour, romance, poetry and even zombies! The display will be up throughout June, so why not take a look next time you are in the Library and read with Pride!

Looking for something to keep your children entertained this summer holiday?

Through DfE funding, Hertfordshire County Council and Herts Sports Partnership have co-ordinated a huge range of activities running at different venues across the county.

KPMG apprenticeships

Apprenticeship programmes

Our apprenticeship programmes offer the chance to gain practical work experience and build core skills within our global network of firms. Apprentices will be supported to achieve professional qualifications and accreditations, such as diplomas and degrees, and earn a salary – all at the same time. Watch our apprentice videos.

Our 2023 intake apprenticeships are still open for applications, including our Audit, Tax, Business Services, Consulting Managed Services and Consulting apprenticeships.

Discovery Work Experience programme

As well as giving students the chance to gain an invaluable overview of the professional services sector, this programme will provide an excellent virtual insight into the work we do, our culture and people - and provide students with some interactive learning opportunities to enhance their skills.

KPMG application process

We’ve designed an application process to support students in showing us their potential. We’ve also put together some top tips to help them make the most of the opportunity here. Students can take a practice test to practise the types of questions that will appear in our live assessment.

Talent Community

Students can join our Talent Community and be among the first to hear about any new openings. As a member they’ll receive updates on any roles that become available.

Is KPMG right for me?

During the recruitment process, we want to understand if applicants' strengths are aligned with those required for success at KPMG.

Looking at their strengths will help them and us to know whether they would enjoy working here and have the potential to thrive.

Please read our Is KPMG Right for Me? page

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)

ESG is the lens through which every business must make every decision to be fit for the future and thrive. What companies do now will determine the talent they attract, the customers they serve, the profits they make, and ultimately the impact they’ll have on society.

You can watch our ESG at KPMG One Blue Marble video

Graduate Careers Live! is essential viewing for all Year 12 students and their parents, just before they begin considering their post-Sixth Form options, visiting universities and researching degree apprenticeships.

Broadcast earlier this term from a TV studio in central London, the 90-minute programme features:

• the very latest research on today’s graduate job market, and the universities and degree courses that are most likely to lead to successful graduate employment in the future

• studio guest Zoe Thomas, author of The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide

• specially recorded interviews with recent graduates and degree apprentices from Dyson, Rolls-Royce and the Royal Navy, describing their career path since leaving the Sixth Form

• an in-depth introduction to degree apprenticeships – the alternative, debt-free route to the graduate job market – and a showcase of employers now offering degree apprenticeships to Sixth Form school-leavers

• expert advice and guidance from senior graduate recruiters – from banking &

finance, law, accounting & professional services, and the public sector – on how to make the most of university and to get ready for the graduate job market

The programme is presented by Martin Birchall, Editor of The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers, and Levi Jouavel, a BBC presenter and former apprentice. It is produced in partnership with the Department for Education.
