COVID GUIDANCE

If you have symptoms of Covid-19 or you have tested positive for Covid-19, you should stay at home and avoid contact with other people.

Symptoms of Covid-19 can include:

  • a high temperature or shivering
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
  • shortness of breath
  • feeling tired or exhausted
  • an aching body
  • a headache
  • a sore throat
  • a blocked or runny nose
  • loss of appetite

  • feeling sick or being sick

Students under 18 years old who test positive or have symptoms should stay at home for 3 full days. The day you first have symptoms or have a positive test result is Day 0. You may return to school on Day 4 provided you do not have a temperature and feel well enough.

Full government guidance is available here.

We will continue to support the personal choice of students and staff in wearing a face covering. We will also continue to ensure good levels of hygiene and ventilation for everyone here at school, and will maintain appropriate cleaning regimes.

If you have questions regarding official guidance please call 119 for visit the NHS website.

If a student is unwell, regardless of whether Covid-19 is suspected, they should stay away from school and the absence should be reported via our online absence form.

REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCE

We have an online absence reporting form for all absences (whole day or part of the day). If you are unable to use the form you will need to email absence@hgs.herts.sch.uk with the student's name and tutor group, reason for absence and expected return date (if known).

SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Message from the Headteacher

Good afternoon and welcome to the first newsletter of 2023.

I'd like to start by wishing you all a very Happy New Year, and I hope that the break gave everyone an opportunity to rest and enjoy time with family and friends.

This term is the last full term for our Year 11 and Year 13 students, and has started with the Year 11s receiving their mock results and Year 13s beginning their mock exams.

Through my conversations with a number of students, I know that the Year 11s are already reflecting on their results and thinking of the next steps they need to take in readiness for the exams in the summer. Revision sessions are being finalised and details of these will be sent home in the coming weeks.  Please do take the time to discuss your child's revision plans with them. It is important that we work together in supporting them with a balanced approach to revision, which prepares them effectively for their assessments but also allows space and time for them to do the things they enjoy and stay happy and healthy.

This week saw Year 9s start to engage with the final stages of choosing their GCSE Options, and the Year 11s are involved in their Sixth Form interviews too; a truly exciting time as students take ownership of their learning and shape what school will look like for them in the coming years.

I am looking forward to another successful term for all of our students. With enterprise activities, parental workshops, trips, Talk the Talk events, the Classics play, careers events and parents' evenings, there is much to look forward to.

Have a good weekend,

James Crowther

Winter Health Update

From Geraldine Bruce, Head of Health Protection, Hertfordshire Public Health

As children return to schools, we expect to see many more cases of flu,
COVID-19 and other infections that affect children’s breathing (known as ‘respiratory infections’).

There also continue to be high numbers of scarlet fever cases, which can spread quickly, but can be easily treated with antibiotics. To help us through this term, below are five simple steps we can take to protect children, minimise the spread of illness in schools and protect others.

Stay home if unwell
Infections can spread quickly in schools and other childcare settings. If your child is unwell and has a fever they should stay home from school until they feel
better and their fever has gone.

Adults should try to stay home when unwell and consider wearing a face covering
to protect others if they do have to go out. Don’t visit people in hospitals or care
homes if you have a fever, a cold or symptoms of a stomach upset.

Keep hands clean
It is important to help children understand that keeping hands clean can stop bugs from spreading. Help your child wash their hands regularly at home with soap and warm water.

Catch coughs and sneezes
Catching coughs and sneezes in tissues then binning them is a simple way to help
stop illness from spreading. Keeping rooms well ventilated will also help prevent
the spread of winter illness.

Get vaccinated if you’re eligible
Now is a good time to check that your family’s vaccinations are all up to
date. If you are unsure whether your child has had all their routine vaccinations, you can check their personal health record (Red Book) or ask your GP. You can also check the childhood immunisation schedule online.

And it’s not too late to get the free NHS flu jab or nasal spray this year if anyone in
your family is eligible. The NHS will be contacting parents of children who have not yet had their flu immunisation.

Be scarlet fever aware
Call your GP for advice if you think your child has scarlet fever. More information
about scarlet fever can be found on the NHS website. If you are concerned about a rash that your child has, advice is available here:
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/rashes-babies-and-children/

Parent workshops

We have two parents' workshops coming up, which parents and carers are invited to sign up for via Eventbrite. We look forward to seeing you!

KS3 Resilience Parental Workshop with Phase - Wed 25 Jan, 6.30 -8pm
Hannah Dengate, Wellbeing lead at Phase, will lead this session exploring what resilience is, why it is important for good mental health and how we can build it.
The session will be practical, looking at the different aspects of resilience (physical, social, mental and emotional), and offering an opportunity to think through what building resilience looks like practically, including in the home setting. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

Eco Club - focus on recycling

Eco Club welcomed Helena & David from Hertfordshire Waste Partnership into school recently, for an interesting analysis of the contents of our bins!

Together they took a look at what was in the different types of recycling bins around school, separating it all into correctly binned waste and other contaminants that hinder the recycling process, and then weighing the waste and recording the data.

It was an excellent reminder of the importance of disposing of different materials in the right way and will hopefully lead to improvements around school.

Well done Hayden!

We're so proud of Hayden (Y9), who was selected to represent Watford at the National Water Polo Championships in the Under-15 category. Winning three matches and losing three matches, the team came seventh out of eleven, missing out on bronze medal contention to the winners of last year's competition. A brilliant effort!

Congratulations Lily-Rose!

Lily-Rose (10C) has been selected to represent England in Under-17s Roller Hockey at the Euro Girls competition taking place in Switzerland in February! Good luck!

You’ll also get hands-on experience with Python, being guided through a computer vision algorithm that can detect cars on the road – a peek into the world of self-driving vehicles.

AI in Finance
Saturday 25 February

The world of finance has been an early adopter of machine learning, from fraud detection to finance chat bots, yet it’s still just touching the surface of AI’s potential. Our workshop is led by Chelsea Murray, a data scientist at ING with a Masters in Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence from University of Cambridge. Chelsea will introduce you to the vast range of financial AI applications and give you practical experience training a machine learning algorithm to predict credit card fraud.
