SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon and welcome back.

I hope the Easter break provided you all with some good family time and an opportunity for students to rest and relax (as well as revise) before the Summer term.

This is the term for public exams and I wish all students and families well with their preparations. I have been really impressed with the students' attitude and approach so far and I thank you all for supporting your children with this.

This week Year 10 have got underway with their mocks, and the first elements of the GCSEs have begun, with PE moderation and Art exams taking place.  As I am sure you can imagine, this term is incredibly busy for the exams team and I would like to express my thanks to them for all they do in ensuring the smooth running of all of our exams.

Our wider programme has resumed immediately with curriculum-focussed trips for Geography and and Politics students. Year 8s have had the incredible experience of 'Take Your Child to Work Day', which has seen all of the year group engaged in a variety of work-related activities, in the workplace, in school and on location at Sky Studios. Thanks to all who supported this great day - I look forward to hearing from students about their experiences.

Wednesday next week is the school's annual Culture Day - this will be the third year of this important day in our calendar and I am looking forward to seeing students and staff proudly celebrating what is important to them and their cultural identity.

At the end of last term there was much to celebrate in Science and in sports - you can read about this below.

Have a great weekend.

Year 12 Geography students completing a soundscape in Cathedral Quarter, Norwich

Also as part of the Year 12 Geography field trip, coding the shoreline management plan on Southwold Pier.

This year's Take Your Child to Work Day for Year 8s has been another success, with most of our students out experiencing a work day yesterday across a huge range of settings, as you can see from the photos sent in.

Students who didn't go into a workplace still gained fun hands-on experience, first with Airbus visiting us in school and then with an outing to Sky Studios at Elstree.

Airbus ran a workshop where students had to craft a satellite that could launch its payload (a raw egg) into orbit successfully and within budget!

And at Sky our students had a go at making short films as well as seeing behind the scenes of TV production.

Thank you to all families and organisations who were able to support TYCTWD!

Our annual Science Fair took place just before we broke up for Easter, where Years 7 & 8 are invited to carry out a scientific investigation or present a scientific idea in teams of up to four. We had some interesting projects based around this year's theme of 'Change and Adapt', from a record 153 entrants across more than 40 teams. Very well done all for taking part in the competition and having a go.

So the overall winners were...

  • 3rd place - AAA Batteries: Annie, Ariana, Athena - project on cancer cells
  • 2nd place - Contagious Crew: Emma P, Emma H, Eleanor, Emily - project on virus adaptations
  • Winners - Sea Speed: Silvia and Thea - a fantastic experimental project comparing boat designs
  • Out of our primary school entrants, the winner was 'The Survivors' by Mary Exton pupils, who looked at the adaptation of microbes according to climate temperature.

Also right at the end of last term, there were two brilliant achievements in sports from our Years 10 & 11!

The Athletics team were invited to compete at the Lee Valley Stadium against the best schools in the county, and after some incredible performances came away as winners!

And in Futsal, after working very hard all season, the HGS team finished 3rd at the county finals, with Olivia awarded a very well-deserved Player of the Tournament.

Congratulations to you all!

Educake for parents/carers

Your child has access to a platform called Educake for Science. It lets them log in from any device to complete their homework or revise independently for exams. Here's a 3-minute overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5GEZV6-23k

And here's a more detailed look at how students can use Educake to support their GCSE revision: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1HKG-BV9zc

If your child has forgotten their login details they just need to ask one of their Science teachers.

A few years ago our then Head Girl, Ellie Swanton, set up the Pride of HGS Awards as a means of recognising the amazing work that Sixth Form students do both inside and outside school. There are three categories students can be nominated for:

Charity: Someone who has been working to support a charity, in or out of school. This can be through fundraising, volunteering or any other relevant activity.

Community: Someone who has given their time to support the local community or a local community group, inside or outside school.

Selflessness: Someone who has given their time or efforts selflessly to help others. This could be someone that has supported an individual, or can always be relied upon in any situation to give their time and energy.

Anyone can nominate a student. It can be someone outside of school, a friend, a parent or a teacher.

Nominations will close in the first part of the Summer term. The overall winner will be presented with the shield.

To nominate a student please use this link: ttps://forms.gle/sxxvTKPoM2S5PWEq9

We look forward to reading your nominations!
