SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

Welcome to the penultimate newsletter of the calendar year. This week has been a very festive one, with the charity Christmas Fayre run by Frank and Rosa Houses, preparations for the Hitchin Christmas Tree Festival and, of course, our Carol Concerts all taking place.

It was wonderful to see St Mary's filled to capacity on Monday night as we were all treated to a carol service of truly exceptional quality. Congratulations to all of the students and staff involved in putting this together and thanks to Hannah and the team at St Mary's for their support. I talked to a number of families at the end of the service and they couldn't have spoken more highly about the event. With four performances in total (two in the church and two in school), those involved certainly deserve to feel proud of their achievements.

It's not just Christmas activities in school - the regular curriculum continues as students work hard until the last day of term. On Tuesday, Year 9 French students enjoyed a trip to l'Institut Francais in London, which looks to have been a great experience.

Students will be having Christmas lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. A reminder that the school day will end early at 2.30 on Tuesday, to allow staff to come together and also enjoy a Christmas lunch.

With celebration assemblies, end-of-term assemblies and the school pantomime, there's still lots to look forward to before we break up for Christmas on Friday 19 December. Please note we will finish at 12.40 on this day.

Have a good weekend,

James Crowther, Headteacher

Last chance to hunt for lost property! If you have lost any belongings in school this term, please double-check that we are not holding them at the school's main office. We have lots of unnamed items including:

  • shoes
  • trainers
  • scarves and hats
  • umbrellas
  • water bottles
  • earbuds
  • pencil cases
  • keys
  • jewellery
  • purse

๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ„Please vote for Tree 39 this weekend! ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ„

We have a tree at the Hitchin Christmas Tree Festival at Holy Saviour Church again this year, and we would love for you to see the work that our students have put into it!

The theme of our tree is 'Take a Break' and it showcases the work of our Pastoral and Learning Support teams.

The decorations were coordinated by Rosie in Year 10, who worked with our Take a Break Club to provide all these fabulous Lego and paper ornaments for the tree.

The lovely polar bears were created by students in the emotional literacy support programme and art therapy group, so look out for those too!

Some of our Year 9 French students went on a day trip to l'Institut Francais in London earlier this week. They attended an immersive lesson in French culture and then watched a French film about the bravery of ordinary citizens during World War II, the Palme d'Or-nominated 'The Most Precious of Cargoes'. Our thanks go to l'Institut staff for hosting our linguists and for the enriching experience!

Our summer 2025 Sixth Form leavers are invited to collect their exam certificates on 17th December. These may be needed as proof of qualifications in the future.

Any students who are unable to collect their certificates on this date will need to email admin@hgs.herts.sch.uk and we will help to make alternative arrangements for collection.

We have two careers events coming up in school next term:

Year 11: Get Work Ready, Wednesday 21 January

Year 9: Engage Advance Achieve, Thursday 5 February

Both of these ELSA programmes will enable students to take part in interview and job application challenges that local, national and international employers use within their current recruitment processes. The students will gain an insight into the qualities and skills required by todayโ€™s employers, and will benefit from honest feedback from real employers.

The employers taking part are all volunteering their time. ELSA would love to hear from any parents/carers who would also like to take part, or any employers they know of who may be interested. ELSA are looking for:

Year 11: Volunteers who can interview students and take the role of mock interviewer

Year 9: Volunteers whom students can interview, taking the role of interviewee

Anyone who may be able to help is asked to fill in this form and ELSA will then be in touch with them directly.
