SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

It has been an amazing week in school with Performing Arts Week taking centre stage. Our aim is to make school life truly unmissable, and this week has certainly been one filled with memorable activities. We have had dance workshops led by former students who are now professionals on the stage and screen, showing our students routines from SIX, Mama Mia and Wicked; a performance from Electric Umbrella to the whole of Year 7; and a Hamilton workshop led by choreographer Kyle Walker.

Importantly, the week has shone a spotlight on the wide-ranging talents of our students, with a monologue competition, busking at lunchtime, a music recital by our GCSE musicians, and our first ever 'HGS's Got Talent' competition.

As you can imagine all this has brought a real buzz around school, and I'd like to thank all of our guests, the staff involved and the students who took part for their contributions. Promoting the Arts is very important to us at HGS and it has been great to see the impact that they can have.

With the half-term break upon us, I wish Year 11 all the best with their preparations for the second series of mock exams that will take place after the break.

I'd like to wish everyone a restful break, and Ramadan Mubarak to all families who will be marking Ramadan.

James Crowther, Headteacher

And that’s a wrap!

From a monologue competition, busking at lunchtime and a music recital to our first ever ‘HGS’s Got Talent’ contest, it’s been a packed week all about the Performing Arts!

We have been able to run some top-quality musical theatre workshops thanks to two of our alumnae: Izi Maxwell played the lead role in Mamma Mia as well as five of the six queens in SIX in the West End, and Kiera Brunton was a dancer in both of the Wicked films and recently appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, so it was a huge privilege to have first-hand dance tuition from them and try out the choreography from their productions.

And we finished the week strong with a workshop based around another massive show – Hamilton - thanks to dancer and choreographer Kyle Walker, who really brought a focus on the melding of rap with movement.

We also welcomed some members of the wonderful band Electric Umbrella, who famously got the Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell on Britain’s Got Talent! Formed of learning-disabled and neurodiverse people with the aim of supporting creativity, connection and inclusivity, the band gave an infectiously joyous performance that had us all singing along!
